Here are some of my favourite Moroccan food dishes

Big Meals:

Couscous: A Moroccan Friday traditional meal made of steamed semolina grains topped with veggies and meat. It’s served typically on Friday after the midday prayer, and part of it should be given away to the less-fortunate.

Moroccan meals are typically communal, as such couscous is often served on a large dish. Everyone is supposed to eat from their place inwards.

This couscous is also topped with sweet onions and cinnamon- my favourite!

Tagines: A Moroccan stew which, like North American or European stews, is slow cooked for a long time so the flavours soak in. Tagine also refers to the dish in which is it cooked and served.

There are two which I really like. The first is a beef tagine with prunes and almonds

and the other is a chicken, lemon and olive tagine which is sometimes served with fries on top.

Rfissa: Probably my favourite Moroccan meal. Rfissa is a full roast chicken covered in a lentil sauce and served on a base of pieces of msimmen- a traditional moroccan breakfast pancake like bread. It’s an amazing combination of the slightly salty lentils, tender chicken and the solid msimmen.

Pastilla: One of my other favorites. Pasilla (also known as bastella) is like a Moroccan equivalent of a chicken pot pie. It’s a pie cover stuffed with either chicken or seafood, noodles, veggies, and other things. The difference between it and chicken pot pie is it’s more solid and (I think) tastier.

Harira Soup: A classic starter. A soup made of lentils, noodles, chickpeas, and other staples. Everyone makes it a bit different but it’s almost always cheap and tasty!

Lunchtime Foods:

Roast Chicken: The best meal for it’s price. It’s exactly what it looks like, except it’s never more than about $3 Canadian! How can you say no?

Moroccan Sandwiches: One of the easiest things to make. It consists of one khoobs (round Moroccan bread) and sautéed meat and veggies put inside it. It’s a lunchtime staple!

Chawarma: The classic Moroccan lunchtime meal. While difficult to prepare alone, at a restaurant it’s almost always available and almost always cheap. It makes for a cheap lunchtime meal

Eating out:

Syrian: Otherwise known as ‘the place I spend the most money’, Yamal Asham is my favourite restaurant in Rabat. It’s a Syrian restaurant which serves the best drink- a lemon mint juice which is amazing. It also has this incredible hummus which they top with chawarma meat. Easily my favorite meal in Morocco- and it’s not even Moroccan.

McDo: When I really miss home or just crave some salty goodness, I make a trip out to McDonalds. Unlike North America, it’s an expensive place to eat here- mostly because it’s about the same price as it is in Canada. One of my favourites is the McArabia, which is a pita wrap with burger meat and sauce inside. Delicious.
